"The Fam'd Italian Masters"
Italian Choral Music from Ciconia to Monteverdi.
July 6 -11, 2010,
with a pre-workshop day available on July 5.
In 1685 Henry Purcell said whilst
composing his trio sonatas he had “faithfully
endeavour’d a just imitation of the most fam’d Italian Masters,”
and this year’s workshop considers the scope and
influence of Italian composers from Ciconia to
Monteverdi. There will be a wide range of sacred and
secular music to sing and to hear from the 15th to the
17th centuries, including some well-known names like
Palestrina, Allegri, Lotti, Monteverdi and Vivaldi, and
some less familiar such as Cozzolani and Massaino. The
workshop will take place at Washington National
Cathedral and the Cathedral College,
located on the Cathedral grounds.

We shall study and sing
Renaissance and Baroque music from Poland, including the
Missa super "O gloriosa Domina" by Marcin Mielczewski.
The workshop will culminate in an informal concert at
5:00pm (admission free).
KINGS and CONQUISTADORS, Music of Old and New Spain. The
workshop will study and sing music ranging from the medieval cantigas of the pilgrims to Sant’Iago to music of baroque
Spain and Mexico. The workshop will be led by
Philip Cave, director of the early music ensemble

coaching sessions, workshops and demonstrations of rehearsal
